Blue Light Protection

Résiste aux rayuresLight grants us sight and the ability to perceive colour,
but part of it can be harmful to our vision.

Harmful light is composed of both invisible UV rays and visible blue-violet light that are emitted
by several sources indoors and outdoors.

  • Children’s crystalline lenses let through
6x more harmful radiation than adults.1
  • 30 % of adults spend 9 + hours
on a digital device every day.2
  • LED is estimated to account for
84% of all lighting sources by 2020.3

The flickering and glaring caused by short-term exposure to harmful blue light may be one of the reasons for eyestrain, headaches, physical and mental fatigue.

In the long-term, UV and blue-violet light, reaching the eyes’ front and back internal tissues, are a contributing factor to eye diseases such as cataracts and age-related macular degeneration. These diseases are the two leading causes of vision loss in adults over the age of 50.5

With an aging population and increasing life expectancy,
the occurrence of cataracts and amd will be multiplied
by 2 in 30 years.4

It’s important to protect vision from a very early age, all life long. Eye protection should

Your lenses must respect two criteria to reach the minimum level of protection

  • Block at least 20 % of harmful blue light
  • Offer minimum UV protection of E-SPF 25**

Short-term benefits

  • Reduced digital eyestrain
  • Overall well-being (regulation of sleep/wake cycle, better mood and cognitive performances

Long-term protection

  • Premature aging of the eyes (wrinkles)
  • Eye diseases (cataracts and age-related macular degeneration)

**A new index developed by Essilor, certifying the global UV protection of a lens. Lens performance only: the E-SPF index excludes direct eye exposure that depends on external factors (wearer’s morphology, frame shape, position of wear). E-SPF of 25 when Crizal is combined with any lens material other than clear 1.5 plastic.
